A projector plays a 16mm film on a loop. Its steady, mechanical clatter accompanies images of a circle of people in costume for the Plaine Carnival in Marseille. On this day, everyone can reinvent their role, embody a character, and blur the lines between fiction and reality.

La Ronde is a riddle for the eye: what are we really seeing? A popular festival caught in a state of inertia? A tracking shot staging characters?

Like a magic trick, she explores the nature of images and, more broadly, that of cinema itself.

“Centered around Anouk Moyaux’s installation, titled “La Ronde” (a nod to director Max Ophüls), is a gathering of people who themselves seem caught in a circular motion—whether one interprets this reference literally or figuratively. It is thus literally this principle that brings the image to life on the white-stained glass, the 16mm projector running the film—prepared by the artist— in a game of mirrors that determines when she appears. There, clinging to the spinning carousel, the carnival-goers of La Plaine file by, dressed up in varying degrees for the celebration.

This circle, this connection from one person to another, may well have something to do with the way Anouk works: surrounded by collaborators who assist in the process and present themselves before the lens, which, in turn, captures the memory.”
